Writing, Rejection, Uncertainty, Time
Here are a few things that I’m pretty sure I know about writing and publishing, but only if you catch me in an optimistic mood.  Otherwise, I’ll deny ever writing this. I have never felt more certain about the writing path on which I have found myself—never more certain of the steps I am taking.  With some careful contemplation, chin scratching, thoughtful “hmmmm”...

Part of me can't articulate a clear sentence...
…part of me can’t believe it.  I mean…really? I get home this evening and there’s a letter from my agent with my very first—FIRST—advance check wrapped in a nice letter.  That’s all for now.  I’m going to sit and stare at the check for a while. (via Theophrast.us - Chris Howard’s Writing Blog)

Lykeia - our new German Shepherd
We went most of the way up the state of New Hampshire this morning to stop in and see the latest member of the family, Lykeia, a 3-week old German Shepherd.  She won’t be coming home for at least another five weeks.  What a beautiful puppy.  We’re so lucky to have her.  We settled on Lykeia after going through quite a few names that begin with L, including Lysistrata, Lydia, Lirael. ...

Googlexical
Must spend more time pondering the keywords the world uses to get to my site.  I’ve been using Lijit (http://www.lijit.com/) for a month or two, found it very neat to work with—very useful.  Search inside your blog is as important as getting readers to your blog.  Google’s going to get them to an archive page, a month of your posts, and leave them there trying to find what they...

CONduct (Rules for good conduct at conventions)
Diana Rowland spells it out: How to network at conventions in fourteen easy steps, with a bonus: How to make friends.  (I’m one of those introverted writers who needs help making friends).  I’ll be taking all of these with me to World Fantasy in a couple weeks. via Tobias Buckell  (It’s hard to believe someone followed you into the bathroom, still yapping away while...

Dumbledore's gay
J.K. Rowling’s in the States on an “Open Book Tour,” answering questions about everything Harry Potter.  Did Dumbledore love anyone? “I always saw Dumbledore as gay” …a hush fell on the audience followed by a excited response by all in attendance. She went on to say that she had recently read the [movie] script for Half-Blood Prince and noticed a passage in...

My first quote for Seaborn!
This is from Adele Griffin, author of where I want to be (National Book Award Finalist): “From the first page of Seaborn, you are immersed. Chris Howard navigates a wild ride through a brilliantly edgy and richly atmospheric alter-world. Here is a fresh, formidable spin on the fantasy genre, and Howard is a talent to watch out for. Seaborn will leave you spellbound.” —Adele...

I’ve been busy with my current work-in-progress, The New Sirens (sequel to SEABORN, Juno Books 2008), especially after some great feedback at the last critique session in Lexington, MA.  I’m about 60k words into it, roughly halfway through, right on schedule to complete the book around the first of the year.  I’m planning to end up around 120k words—which is how the last...
