I’m so close to completing The New Sirens—working title of the sequel to Seaborn, that I took time tonight to go back and look at notes from my writing/crit group for the early chapters. One of the sentences called out as “nice” in chapter one is,
She kicked higher, pulling Shelly by the hand, one foot bounding off Ochleros’ arm, up to his shoulder where she set...

I know, I know, everything’s on the Web, but it’s a different experience when you live a few miles away from someplace, and then find that there’s even better stuff about it on the web, details I wouldn’t be able to get easily even on site. So, I really don’t need to live a few minutes away from Rye Harbor to know what it looks like, how deep the moorings are, that...

Book Link Widget builder v1 →
Super busy lately, but I did get to spend some time last weekend to put this together—and write two chapters! Okay, so here’s version 1 of the book link widget builder—generic version. I made a Juno Books version here. The idea is to get your readers, fans, friends, family, a good portion of the millions out there on the Web to post your link widget on their blogs, web...

Met with the writing group last night for some critiquing, and Boskone came up. How do you write a novel--and I mean the actual... →
Several good posts on this already, but I’m going to add the things I do. (I’m near the end of my fourth novel, so I’m not writing from a huge well of experience, but these things work for me). By writing, I’m talking construction, how you go about the writing stage of a novel, most of the activity that takes place after you’ve outlined, planned the arc to some...
Where I'm at... →
Seaborn’s sequel: I’m into the 20’s of about 33 chapters, and I’ve started the phase (this has happened with the last three novels) where I begin filling in bits of the remaining chapters as the ideas strike me, writing whole scenes, action, dialogue, without completing the chapter. Then everything starts to sort of ooze together. I’ll start finishing chapters out...
Doll making →
Spent a few with my daughter Chloe making virtual mermaid dolls. You sort of put them together like paper dolls, select from forty different tails, hair styles, tiaras. Yes, pretty intense process. Here’s mine—and I’m thinking where did she get the naval officer’s jacket? That’s a story worth hearing, I’m sure.

Capture the Sun →
I started out wanting to do something a bit different, intending to work in the idea of “stitch” (this week’s Illustration Friday topic). I wanted to stitch together two worlds, the ocean and the surface worlds, weave them together, and everything was heading in that direction, when this tentacled thing rose out of the depths and took over the world. It’s crazy how...
